Horticulture student's
hanging
basket entries for the
Melbourne International
Flower
and Garden Show:
We had a steady stream of very satisfied customers until we closed the gates in the afternoon. We even had customers collecting healthy plants growing in our compost! The overall success of the day clearly demonstrates the skills the trainee students are developing with the guidance and encouragement of their trainers.
At the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show the students entered the hanging baskets competition, which were individually designed, created and maintained by the students. The standard was high and the student baskets compared very well to others entered.
The year is moving very quickly for everyone at the Centre and we are excited at the prospect of several new projects that are about to start.
Centre Committee and staff are working closely with Maroondah City Council to identify a new site as there is no security of tenure with the MCC lease after 2014.
The Ageing In My Garden program, which currently runs in Manningham, has been very successful, with home owners and companion volunteer gardeners working closely together to regain control of unruly gardens, develop new spaces or simply add colour. These partnerships are satisfying for all, with the garden activity balanced by social interaction. Residents appreciate the generous help of interested volunteers, who also enjoy the many benefits of being active in the garden.
Chris Reed, Executive Officer, attended the opening night of the Bloom Exhibition, the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects held at the Gallery of Australian Design. Our unique all-abilities swing/bed, which is very popular with adults and children alike, was featured in the Exhibition, which runs until early June.
Our innovative and popular Grow On program offers accredited horticulture training to post school students. Currently there are limited enrolment opportunities but anyone who is interested in horticulture is encouraged to contact the Centre for more information.
A percentage of our plants, or nursery products, have been donated by very generous supporters from the nursery industry. Many of these donors have been supporting the work of the Centre for over 20 years so their contribution has certainly helped the Centre to thrive over this time. We would like to express appreciation to the following nurseries and suppliers:
Beasley’s Tea House & Nursery
Bulleen Art & Garden
Fleming's Nurseries
Floral-Time Nursery
Holmesglen Institute of TAFE Nursery
Larkman Nurseries
Mansfield’s Propagation Nursery
